FIELD TRIPS

Let’s Talk Coffee® 2018 will feature optional field trips to Huila, located in southwest Colombia, and Santa Marta, located just east of Cartagena. Please note that the field trips occur simultaneously, therefore it is only possible to attend one of the trips.

HUILA FIELD TRIP

EXPERIENCE HUILA’S PRODUCTION FIRSTHAND

On Sunday, September 23, Let’s Talk Coffee® attendees have the option to embark on a field trip to the majestic coffeelands of Huila, a coffee-producing region located in southwest Colombia. Huila’s production has grown to comprise 16% of Colombia’s total coffee production, with a new emphasis on sustainable specialty coffee that we are excited to share with industry stakeholders.

The trip will include a stop at Coocentral, the second largest cooperative in Colombia by production volume with an impressive membership of quality-driven smallholder growers. The cooperative is known for its innovative programs such as Mujeres Cafeteras, which equips women farmers with the knowledge and tools to succeed as specialty coffee businesswomen.

SANTA MARTA FIELD TRIP

Explore the farms and natural wonder of Santa Marta

On Sunday, September 23, attendees will have the option to visit farms of the Red Ecolsierra cooperative in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park, located just east of Cartagena. Highlights of trip include visits to several coffee farms, overnight stays on farms, traditional cuisine, and visits to the beaches of the Tayrona National Park.

Red Ecolsierra stands out in Colombia for its production of organic coffee in the extraordinary natural environment of the Sierra Nevada. The organization was formed in 2001 after farmers banded together to form a supportive organization dedicated to increasing the profitability of organic coffee farming, which is uncommon in Colombia due to the high cost of organic inputs. Today, Red Ecolsierra consists of 18 small groups representing 600 families—235 of which are organic-certified farms, with 365 farms in transition. In addition to coffee, Red Ecolsierra farmers produce honey, cacao, and a roasted coffee product, called Café Tima, that is sold domestically in Colombia.
